“There’s no Elixir, we can help from FIP side but please also pay attention to liver damage, anemic and other problems at the same time !”
About FIP
Multi-cat household: FIP is not contagious, it is the unaltered FCOV that is contagious. If there is a cat with FCOV in a multi-cat household, the other healthy cats will also carry the coronavirus long ago, so there is no need to segregate the affected cats from the other cats, and they can just live a normal life.
Breeding
Some parents want to breed their cats after they have recovered. According to Dr. Pedersen’s research, considering the dual effects of genes and environment, It is not recommended that breeding cats that have given birth to FIP cats should be bred again, and it is not recommended that cats that have already been passed on should be used for breeding again.
Vaccination
Rabies vaccination is not highly recommended (but is mandatory by law in some places), and so far no effects of the regular vaccine have been found in their experimental cats, but it is not recommended for cats who are undergoing treatment, as the immune system has more important things to do at this time. Vaccines are also not recommended within six months of stopping vaccinations, and bathing is not recommended during this time.
However, veterinarians do not usually explicitly tell owners that their cat has feline infectious peritonitis. They will only use words such as suspected, probable, or highly probable. This is because, according to current technology, the only way to make a definitive diagnosis is to wait until the cat is dead and then perform a biopsy. A step-by-step examination will be conducted.
Deworming
If parasites have been detected, it is prudent to use low-toxicity, low-irritation deworming medications. Prophylactic deworming is not recommended during the treatment of an infected abdomen.
Survival rate
As long as the cat is not extremely weak, the medication is administered in a timely manner and in a sufficient amount that we suggest, the cat responds to the medication, and receives sufficient food and water intake, according to the known cases so far, the survival rate is very high.
Stress
Stress in cats can also lead to loss of appetite, pulmonary edema, cardiomyopathy, fatty liver, spontaneous cystitis and other problems, so please avoid stressing your cat as much as possible during the treatment!
Diet
Ensuring that your cat's diet is safe is very, very, very important in saving your cat's life! ! If your cat does not want to eat or cannot eat on its own, please feed it in small quantities! If the cat does not want to eat on its own or is unable to eat on its own, please make sure to feed the cat a small amount of food several times and give it fluids from the hospital in a timely manner, as many cats with FIP die due to a lack of energy intake and exhaustion. Force-feeding can be done with diluted canned food (e.g. Hills AD cans) or by grinding the cat food into powder and force-feeding with a syringe. It is important to ensure that the daily intake of food and water meets the minimum consumption of the cat in order to avoid exhaustion of the sick cat, and that the cat does not need to consume the canned AD food after resuming its own food intake (calculation of food and water intake is attached).
Parents should be prepared for the possibility that the cat's tastes may change many times during the diarrhea period, and that the cat's preferences may be diametrically opposed to those of the past. Many parents choose to feed their cats meat in an attempt to boost their body mass and albumin. Cats absorb meat at a much higher rate than cat food, but only if it is nutritionally complete, with a wide variety of meats, of reliable quality, and with the right amount of trace amounts of the required food, as well as the most basic calcium. If you are unable to feed your cat scientifically and correctly, please choose a high protein natural food and a high quality canned staple food, which will also improve your cat's health, so as to avoid any nutritional imbalance caused by feeding your cat indiscriminately.
Since cats digest cat food, canned cat food and meat with different gastric acid secretions, please feed cat food, canned cat food and pure meat (whether raw or cooked) separately, with more than 2 hours between cat food and canned cat food, more than 4 hours between cat food and pure meat, and more than 2 hours between canned cat food and pure meat, in order to avoid indigestion, vomiting and diarrhea in your cat.
Temperature
Normal anal temperature is 38-39.5℃, but if you don't know how to measure anal temperature, please check skin temperature. Place a thermometer in the center of the cat's hind leg (mercury thermometer for 5 minutes), the skin temperature +0.5℃ is usually the anal temperature.
Hospitalization
As many doctors do not have enough knowledge about FIP, parents should follow the doctor's instructions and at the same time ask the doctor carefully about any unreasonable situations immediately.)
Infusion: Under normal circumstances, the hospital will give a large amount of fluids at a fast flow rate. However, if the cat is too weak (e.g. hypothermia, electrolyte disorders, severe liver damage, jaundice, nutritional deficiencies, etc.), the slow speed of infusion will not be able to make up for the shortfalls. Therefore, regarding the total amount of fluids to be given and the drip rate, please consult your doctor to ensure that the metabolic balance of your cat's body can be maintained. Anaemic cats need to be more careful than other cats with diarrhea because the total amount of haemoglobin in the body cannot be increased in a short period of time. Once a large amount of fluids are given in a rapid manner, the haemoglobin participating in the circulation will be diluted, leading to a more serious degree of anaemia.
Keeping warm at low temperatures: low temperatures in cats are usually due to the fact that they have not eaten for a long period of time, and there is no heat to supply to the body to maintain the body temperature, so in addition to keeping warm, you must pay attention to the infusion of food when the temperature is low. If the temperature is below 38 degrees, the cat's body temperature must be maintained, otherwise the cat will easily die of hypothermia. If you have the condition, send the baby to hospital and put it into incubator, and then give it fluids and feed it forcibly according to the situation. If you don't have the condition, use external heat source at home (e.g. forced hot air blanket or circulating hot water blanket or mat or hot water bag, etc.) to actively rewarm the body and force-feed the baby. However, do not keep the heat on because the sick cat's body is dehydrated, and keeping the heat on will aggravate the dehydration and may lead to death, so be sure to keep the body temperature in check.
Thoracic and abdominal fluid: If the thoracic fluid is compressing the respiration, a portion of the fluid must be pumped out, and not more than 1/3 of the fluid must be pumped out to avoid sudden changes in the pressure in the body, and at the same time, oxygen may be administered as appropriate to improve the situation of shortness of breath. If there is no compression of the chest cavity leading to respiratory difficulties and organ compression is too severe, ascites should not be pumped out as much as possible, and if medication is not administered in time, the ascites will continue to seep out, which in turn will increase the risk of infection. After medication is administered, the ascites and its nutrients will be reabsorbed by the cat's body. Confirmation: Wet cats can be diagnosed by drawing out a small amount of ascites from the chest. Look at the color of the ascites, analyze the specific gravity of the ascites, the white content, the cell content, and perform a baguette test. If the hospital recommends pcr testing, please choose whether or not to send it in. Since the results of biochemistry and blood tests may not be obvious, and there is no chest or abdominal fluid to be extracted for testing, if you have a high suspicion, please buy medication to reverse the process immediately. Successful reversal of the process indicates that the cat is indeed suffering from abdominal transmission, so please feel free to take the injection, and immediately investigate other causes of the disease if there is no improvement. Sick cats are physically weak, under normal circumstances, please do not agree to open the abdomen in the hospital to confirm the diagnosis, and after opening the abdomen, please take good care of the cat after the operation.
Supplementary drugs: Cats with abdominal infections often suffer from loss of appetite, anemia, liver damage (some with jaundice), diarrhea, vomiting, etc. Please refer to the following medication recommendations, and consult with your doctor or us before deciding on the specific medication to be used!
